What are creosote stages 1, 2, and 3?
Stage one is a light, flaky soot that brushes off easily. Stage two packs into the joints like tar and takes a rotary brush to shift. Stage three is a shiny black glaze fused to the tile, and it’s the one that starts chimney fires.
Stage one, handle it yourself. A hand brush takes care of it, or just mention it at your next appointment and let it get done then. That table is a rough guide, not a diagnosis. Stage two in particular fools people. It can look worse than it is, or it can hide a thin skin of glaze underneath a layer that still looks like tar.
Texture is the tell, not color. Run a fingernail over it if you’re brave enough. Flaky is stage one. Tacky or crunchy is stage two.
If it’s hard and won’t give at all, that’s stage three, and that’s the one that gets called in.
How each stage actually forms
Creosote isn’t dirt.
It’s unburned wood, and it ends up on your flue wall because the smoke never finished burning before it hit cool air.
A hot, clean fire sends smoke up the flue fast, and most of what’s in that smoke burns off before it ever touches the tile. A cool fire does the opposite. Damp the air down, burn wood that’s still wet inside, or run a fire with the glass doors mostly closed, and the smoke crawls up slow and cold. Whatever didn’t burn condenses on the flue wall, the same way steam fogs a cold window. That’s stage one.
If the fire that produced it was cool enough, or it happened often enough, that condensed layer starts absorbing more of the same smoke instead of shedding it. That’s how stage one becomes stage two. Stage three needs one more thing on top of that: heat cycling. The glaze forms when a heavy tar layer gets warmed just enough to soften, without ever fully burning off, over and over across a season.
Each cycle bakes it a little harder and a little shinier. It’s the same idea as sugar turning to glass. Heat it, let it cool, never let it burn, and it hardens into something a spoon can’t scratch.
Field note: The chimneys I open up in the foothills (Grass Valley, Nevada City, Pollock Pines) build glaze faster than anything I see down in the valley. It’s not a mystery why. Up there, wood is the actual heat source for the house, burned daily from November through March, and a lot of those stoves get damped down overnight to hold the fire until morning. That overnight burn is about the coolest, smokiest fire a stove produces, and it’s the single biggest cause of stage three I run into. A valley home burning four or five fires a season with seasoned oak might go years without building anything past stage one.
When you don’t need to worry about creosote
Stage one isn’t a hazard. It’s just what a normal fire leaves behind. Every wood-burning appliance produces some of it, no matter how well it’s run.
Burn a handful of fires a winter with dry, seasoned wood and an open damper, and you’re probably looking at stage one every time you check. That doesn’t call for a professional removal. Get the chimney inspected once a year so someone catches it if that ever changes, and sweep it when the inspection says there’s something worth sweeping. Paying to remove stage one is money spent removing something that was never going to hurt you.
Stage two and stage three are the reason to stop guessing. They build up behind a closed damper where nobody’s looking, and neither one waves a flag to tell you it’s there.
What else turns up when we’re in there
Creosote isn’t the only thing a flashlight catches once the flue’s open. Nesting material, feathers, or droppings usually mean you’ve got animals in your chimney, and a rough, buildup-heavy flue gives them plenty to grip and burrow into.
