Dryer Takes Too Long To Dry? Check The Duct First

Your dryer takes too long to dry, and you already know it. One load used to take forty minutes. Now it needs an hour, plus a second cycle, every time. Before you replace a machine that might be fine, run the five-minute check below. It tells you almost for certain whether the problem is inside the dryer or waiting in the duct behind it.

Why does a dryer take so long to dry a load? In most homes around here it’s restricted airflow, not a broken machine.

Lint packed inside the duct does it. So does a crushed section behind the wall, or a long run to a second-floor laundry room. All three choke the exhaust the same way. Clear the path, and drying time drops back to one cycle.

The five-minute test for a restricted vent

Start a load. Then go outside to the exhaust hood while it’s running. Hold your hand a couple of feet back from the flap and see what you feel.

A clear line pushes warm air out steady enough to notice from that distance, and the flap swings mostly open and stays there. A weak trickle means something’s wrong. So does a flap that barely lifts, even when you tap it. Either one means something between the machine and that hood is restricting the airflow.

That’s it. That’s the whole test.

If the airflow feels strong and the load still runs long, the duct probably isn’t your problem. The causes further down this page are worth checking before you call anyone.

The causes, most likely first

Most calls I get about a dryer that takes a long time to dry come down to one of six things. A few are DIY in ten minutes. A couple are not.

Why is my dryer not drying at all?

If your dryer runs hot, the drum turns, and nothing comes out actually dry, check the outside vent hood first. A fully blocked duct traps hot, humid air with nowhere to go, so the dryer keeps running without any real airflow moving through it. The load just sits there, no drier than when it started. Nothing mechanical failed.

When you don’t need duct cleaning at all

Two cycles to dry one load doesn’t always mean the duct is the problem. Say you already wipe the lint screen down every load, and the vent hood pushes air strong when you test it. Then you’re probably just overloading the dryer.

Or a dryer sheet has worked its way onto the screen and is blocking it without being obvious to the eye. Fabric softener sheets leave a waxy residue on that screen long before it looks dirty. Wash it with dish soap, run one normal-sized load by itself, and see if the problem disappears before you book anyone.

A dryer that takes a long time to dry every load, on every setting, for months, is a different story than one bad week. If it’s been gradual and getting worse, that points at buildup inside the line rather than a one-off overload.

A field note on second-floor laundry rooms

I see this constantly in the newer Rocklin, Roseville, and El Dorado Hills subdivisions. They were built over the last fifteen or twenty years. The laundry room sits on the second floor for convenience, and the duct has to run twenty or thirty feet through the attic and down an exterior wall to get outside.

That’s a lot of pipe for lint to settle in. Builders often ran it in flexible foil instead of rigid metal, because foil is cheaper and easier to snake through framing. Every ridge in that foil catches lint. A house built this way needs the duct cleaned on a shorter interval than a ground-floor laundry room with six feet of straight rigid pipe to the wall.

Dryer ducts aren’t the only path in a house that stops moving air correctly. A gas fireplace will not light for a similar-sounding reason sometimes: a restricted gas line, or a fouled sensor, rather than anything to do with lint. It’s worth ruling out if a fireplace nearby started acting up around the same time your dryer did.
